Pin up art?.........clueless

I need help with understanding what makes a pinup a pinup. Ive been told by many that i should be doing pinup, but i dont know exactly what makes a piece of art a pinup. Is it the colors used? the pose of the model? What? What? What? Can anyone out there help me out with this?
